Policies
Unless otherwise stated, Emory's existing technology and copyright
policies and procedures will apply to the Emory iTunes U site. These
include but are not limited to:
Content contributors to iTunes U will complete and sign a form stating
that the podcast (audio, video and images) contains only materials personally
created and that no part of the content constitutes defamation, slander,
invasion of privacy, or violation of any right of publicity or other
rights of any person or entity. If the podcast contains materials not
personally authored or are outside public domain, contributors must
also attest in the form that all necessary licenses, consents and authorizations
have been secured.
Questions about copyright and related issues will be referred to the
Emory's Office of the General Counsel.
Administration of iTunes U
The Editorial Board will pre-approve all content
providers and serve as custodian of record for copyright release
forms and be responsible for developing procedures for removing
materials from the site.
Using guidelines approved by the Editorial
Board, the Site Administrator will create section pages
and album covers, giving appropriate permissions to the content
provider. The Site Administrator will be responsible for monitoring
storage and bandwidth limits on the iTunes U site to avoid additional
fees excised by Apple and to ensure proper load balancing on
the server.
Uploading content is the responsibility of
the content creator or producer. Emory's
Center for Interactive Teaching will be the service
point for support to assist faculty and others in uploading
course-related content.
Backup of materials uploaded to iTunes U is
the sole responsibility of the content provider. Neither Apple
nor the Editorial Board is responsible for maintaining backups
of iTunes U content
Ownership
All materials uploaded to Emory's iTunes U maintain
their prior ownership when uploaded. Ownership is covered by Emory's
copyright and intellectual property polices for faculty, staff and students.
An Emory academic department, chartered campus organization,
faculty member, staff member or student must sponsor materials uploaded
to the Public Content section of Emory's iTunes U.
Emory encourages faculty and event sponsors to arrange
for recording of material of potential interest to iTunes U and to secure
release forms from all participants at the time of recording.
No materials may be sold directly through iTunes U
(Apple policy). However, the iTunes U Editorial Board will consider
requests from content providers to upload a short piece of "preview"
content that may link to a third party site selling the book or other
offering. [ex. a recently published book authored by faculty member.]
Retention
Policies regarding University data are subject to
existing policies regarding retention (http://records.emory.edu)
and content (http://policies.emory.edu/).
Content considered to be inappropriate may be removed from iTunes
U without warning and pending the outcome of further investigation.
Content may also be removed by its owner without warning.Content may
be removed by site or section administrators in accordance with expiration
procedures.
iTunes U is neither an official data repository or archival database
for Emory University. Policies and procedures regarding data retention
and legal discovery must take this fact into account. Content on iTunes
U may be downloaded and uploaded regularly, not only by users but
by site administrators. As this happens, metadata about content
creation/modification might be changed, even if the content itself
remains unchanged. This means that difficulties arise because
it is important to maintain a record admissibility which include being
reliable, authentic, complete and unaltered, and usable. In
most cases documentation in needed to demonstrate these characteristics
of a record. All this is to say that content on iTunes U is
considered an unauthenticated copy of content that exists elsewhere
and is not considered a University "record".
Content is not created within the iTunes U environment and therefore,
the content on iTunes U cannot be said to be original content nor
should it be expected that the copy of content on iTunes U is the
only copy of that content that exists. This is made clear to
all content providers through consultation as well as during their
initial online request for space.
iTunes U Academic Course Retention
iTunes U courses are organized by semester. Students from previous semesters will continue to see content from their previously-enrolled courses for two years.
Storage
The Editorial Board is the ultimate arbiter
of appropriate content for distribution on iTunes U. Emory recognizes
that posting material online is a legitimate way to increase
audience gather content into an Emory-branded media gateway.
Storage and bandwidth issues may, however, force the University
to limit uploaded material.
